# What is ice melt, and how does it work?

Ice melt is like a special salt that lowers the freezing point of water. When we add it to your service, it helps melt light snow and icy patches. We apply it as needed when clearing snow—no extra visits between snow falls just for ice melt. We expect you to provide us a bag of your choice outside the front porch, so we could spread that for free for you.
